What do I want to achieve with the youngsters?
- Self-management
- Self awareness
- Take initiative
- Self confidence
How do I position myself as a coach?
- Let youngsters use mistakes as learning opportunities.
- Provide an environment in which competence-based work can be done by offering experiential activities.
- Provide constructive criticism and positive reinforcement.
- Ask activating questions.
- Emphasize what goes well when learning and set goals together.
- Make the youngsters aware of their own responsibility and encourage an inquisitive attitude.
- Be genuinely curious about what drives them, makes them act, inspires and motivates them.
Training tips
- Map the motives for working with the youngsters. If necessary, work with sample cards with motives on them and arrange them according to their importance.
- Let young people come up with examples of learning situations from these different areas of life.
- Visualize the learning process in a drawing or collage. Also make room for goals and intermediate steps. What can I influence myself? Adjust in reflection if there is little insight due to clarifying and confronting questions.
- Facilitate a volunteer workplace. Here youngsters have the opportunity to experience a workplace where mistakes can be made.
Language tips
- Encourage young people to speak and learn Dutch in their spare time. Make a link with situations of learning opportunities in a group of friends, mentors/coaches or sports club.
